Student Handbook

A Message from the Principal

Dear Matthew Paterson Elementary School Families,

It is with great enthusiasm that I welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year as well formally introduce myself as the new Principal of Matthew Patterson Elementary School. As you may know, I most recently held the position of assistant principal at George Fischer Middle School. I come to MPES with over fifteen years of elementary teaching experience in the New Rochelle and New York City School Districts as well as a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports Coach. I currently reside in Dutchess County with my wife, daughter and son.

Over past several weeks I have met with several members of the MPES community and heard about many of the wonderful learning opportunities and events that take place here each school year. This will continue to be the case this year as our students will have access to a new STEM/Collaborative Lab.  This space will be used to enhance and develop our students understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

In my experiences as an elementary teacher, school building PBIS leader, and administrator I have always promoted a culture of positivity. My classroom was consistently described as a safe and nurturing environment and this is something that we strive for here at MPES. I look forward to establishing partnerships so that together we can educate the whole student to become lifelong learners in an ever-changing world.

Research has proven that successful parent involvement improves not only student behavior and attendance but also positively affects student achievement. Therefore I strongly encourage our MPES families to get involved with our PTO, attend school events and connect with your child’s teacher.

The Family Handbook has been developed to help you and your child understand the behavioral and instructional expectations at MPES. As mandated by the Dignity for All Students Act, please read this handbook with your child/children. It is important that you sign and return page 2 of this handbook to the school. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Michael Kirk
Principal, Matthew Paterson Elementary
