Strictly No Elephants!

As part of Carmel Central School District's monthly social-emotional learning initiative, every elementary principal read "Strictly No Elephants," by Lisa Mantchev, to students.

"Each monthly theme will explicitly align with the Carmel Central School District's Six Cs (Critical Thinking, Citizenship, Compassion, Creativity, Collaboration, and Communication) and include a common read-aloud, schoolwide activity, classroom connections, and family engagement component," MPES Principal Jennifer Darling said.  "We read the book "Strictly No Elephants" and discussed that true friends support one another and that no one should be left out because they are different. "

KPS Principal Vincent Fino and KES Principal Kerry Weltman said the book's message connected beautifully to the districtwide September theme, “We Belong,” and the idea that “Your Presence Matters.”  
The story follows a young boy and his tiny pet elephant who discover that they are not welcome at a local club. This month, our SEL focus is compassion—helping every student understand that they are valued, included, and that they belong in the Carmel Central School District. 

Following the read-aloud, students throughout the district shared their thoughts and ideas about kindness, inclusion, and what it means to make sure everyone feels like they belong. What a wonderful way to begin the month of learning and growing together!
